How to Reset Cobra Security Camera

Goprocamera27, April 24, 2026

If your Cobra security camera system won’t let you log in, freezes during setup, or shows “online” but no video feed, a Cobra security camera reset is likely your only solution. Unlike most modern smart devices, Cobra systems—especially those sold through Harbor Freight—don’t offer a “Forgot Password” option. That means if you’ve moved, stored the system for years, or simply forgotten the login, the only way back in is through a manual factory reset. This guide covers every major model, including wireless 4-channel kits, the CDR 900 dash cam, and the widely used 63890 8-channel DVR, with step-by-step instructions, troubleshooting fixes, and post-reset setup tips to get your surveillance back online fast.

Reset Wireless Cobra Cameras (My CamView App)

If you’re locked out of a Cobra wireless security system using the My CamView app, don’t waste time searching for password recovery—there isn’t one. A physical reset is required.

Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Locate the reset button on the back or side of the recorder or individual camera.
  2. Press and hold it for 10–15 seconds using a paperclip or pin.
  3. Release when the device reboots and LEDs flash.
  4. Wait 1–2 minutes for the system to fully restore to factory defaults.

Warning: This erases all settings, Wi-Fi networks, motion detection zones, and internal recordings.

Reconnect to My CamView App

After the reset:
– Open the My CamView app on your phone.
– Ensure your device is on a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network (5 GHz is not supported).
– Follow the in-app prompts to reconnect the DVR and pair cameras.
– Use default login: Username: admin | Password: (blank) or admin
– Reconfigure motion detection, recording schedules, and alerts.

Pro Tip: Write down the device UID shown in the app and label your DVR. It helps avoid confusion if managing multiple systems.

Reset Cobra CDR 900 Dash Cam

Even though it’s designed for vehicles, the CDR 900 uses the same firmware logic as other Cobra security devices.

Factory Reset via Menu

  1. Press the MENU button on the dash cam.
  2. Navigate to SETTINGS > FACTORY RESET.
  3. Confirm the action.
  4. The device will reboot and wipe all data.

Critical: Export any saved videos to a computer or cloud before resetting—recovery is impossible afterward.

Restore Access via DriveHD App

Post-reset steps:
– Reconnect to the DriveHD app.
– Use default credentials: admin / admin.
– Re-enter time, date, loop recording, and G-sensor settings.
– Re-pair with your phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot if needed.

No remote unlock exists—only a factory reset regains access to a locked CDR 900.

Reset Cobra 63890 8-Channel DVR

Cobra 63890 DVR reset button location

This standalone analog system has no password recovery option. If you’ve lost admin access, a physical reset is the only fix.

Use Front Panel Button Combo

  1. Power off the DVR completely.
  2. Press and hold the front panel button(s)—some models require holding one or two buttons.
  3. Turn on the power while holding the button.
  4. Keep pressing until the system boots and resets (may take 30 seconds).

Alternative method:
– Remove the internal hard drive.
– Power on the DVR without it.
– Wait 10 seconds, then reinsert the drive.
– This can trigger a boot error that forces a reset.

Default Login After Reset

  • Username: admin
  • Password: (leave blank) or admin

Important: Passwords are limited to 8 characters. Anything longer is silently truncated—don’t use complex 12+ character passwords.

Fix Common Reset Issues

Even after a successful reset, problems can persist. Here’s how to diagnose and fix them.

No Video After Reset

Cause: Cameras not recognized or improperly powered.

Solutions:
– Check all BNC connections and power adapters.
– Ensure each camera receives 12V DC from the correct power supply.
– Reboot the entire system.
– Go to Main Menu > Device > Camera to verify camera status.

App Shows “Online” But No Feed

Cause: UID mismatch or network conflict.

Fixes:
– Confirm the device UID in the My CamView app matches the label on the DVR.
– Reconnect to a 2.4 GHz network.
– Restart your router and DVR.
– Update the My CamView app to the latest version.

Recover Recordings After Reset

A factory reset erases settings, but recordings may still be recoverable if the hard drive wasn’t reformatted.

Export Files via USB

  1. Insert a USB flash drive into the DVR’s front port.
  2. Go to Playback > USB Export.
  3. Select video clips and choose MP4 or AVI format.
  4. Safely eject the drive.

Why MP4/AVI? These formats preserve audio. H.264 exports often play without sound in VLC.

Audio Playback Tips

  • Audio is encoded in aLaw, 8 kHz, mono.
  • VLC may not play it without extra codecs.
  • Use Media Player Classic or convert files using HandBrake for wider compatibility.

Enable Hidden Features Post-Reset

After resetting, you can unlock advanced capabilities not in the manual.

Use PTZ Controls Over Coax

Even with fixed cameras, enable COAX1 protocol for camera adjustments:

  1. Go to Main Menu > Device > PTZ.
  2. Set Protocol = COAX1 per channel.
  3. Save and return to live view.
  4. Press IRIS+ to open camera settings (AE, WB, Day/Night mode).

Works with non-Cobra analog cameras that support coaxial signaling.

Set Up Motion Detection & Alerts

Restore automation by reconfiguring motion recording after reset.

Configure Motion Recording

  1. Enter Alarm > Motion Detect.
  2. Set Enabled = Enabled (yes, the label is confusing).
  3. Draw masking zones to ignore trees, pets, or shadows.
  4. Adjust sensitivity (30–60% recommended).

Link to Recording Schedule

  1. Go to Record Schedule.
  2. Highlight time blocks.
  3. Select Motion as trigger type.
  4. Choose which channels record on motion.

Expert Tip: Use one camera to detect motion and trigger recording on another—e.g., overhead sensor activates door-level camera.

Configure Email & Cloud Alerts

Stay notified—when it works.

Set Up Email Snapshots

  1. Go to Network > Email.
  2. Enter SMTP settings (Gmail, Outlook, etc.).
  3. Enable Motion Detection > Send Email.
  4. Test with the Test Email button.

Limitation: Prone to false alerts from light changes or wind.

Use Dropbox for Cloud Backups

  • Only snapshots (JPG) upload to cloud.
  • Video uploads not supported.
  • Link your Dropbox account in Network > Cloud.
  • No support for Google Drive or OneDrive.

Fix RTSP Streaming After Reset

Remote viewing via VLC requires precise setup.

Use Correct RTSP URLs

Avoid manual errors—use:

  • Main Stream: rtsp://[DVR_IP]:554/ch01/0
    (e.g., rtsp://192.168.1.120:554/ch01/0)

  • Sub Stream: rtsp://[DVR_IP]:554/ch01/1 (often fails)

Critical: Use ch01, not ch1. The leading zero is required.

Stream in VLC Media Player

  1. Open VLC > Media > Open Network Stream.
  2. Paste the RTSP URL.
  3. Use VLC 2.2.6—version 3.0.2 disconnects after 2 minutes.

Download older VLC versions from videolan.org/archive.

Bypass FTP Upload Problems

FTP is buggy—but testable.

Configure FTP Settings

  1. Go to Network > FTP.
  2. Enter:
    – Server IP or domain
    – Port 21
    – Username/password
    – Directory path
  3. Click TestFTP.

Handle Common Errors

  • “Creat File Folder Failed!”: Not a real error—folder already exists.
  • No automatic uploads: A known firmware bug. FTP snapshots rarely upload despite test success.
  • SFTP not supported: Avoid public networks due to security risk.

Recommendation: Don’t rely on FTP. Use USB exports instead.

Secure Your System After Reset

Cobra DVR user management password change

Default settings are vulnerable. Harden your setup.

Change Default Credentials

  1. Go to System > User Management.
  2. Change password from blank or admin.
  3. Use 8 characters max—longer passwords are cut off.

Block Remote “Phoning Home”

The DVR sends data to China:
– IP: 47.90.204.196 (Zhuhai Raysharp)
– Purpose: Enables remote app access.

To block:
– Router firewall: Block outgoing traffic to this IP.
– Or disconnect DVR from internet—local recording still works.

Limit Remote Access

  • Disable DDNS and port forwarding if not needed.
  • If remote viewing is essential, use port 554 only when required.
  • Never expose the DVR to the open internet.

Contact Support When Stuck

Harbor Freight handles all Cobra security system support.

Support Options

  • Phone: 800-543-1608 (Mon–Fri, 9 AM–5 PM ET)
  • Live Chat: Cobra.com (Mon–Fri, 10 AM–6:30 PM ET)
  • Online Ticket: Submit via Cobra website
  • Email: Provided after initial contact

Note: No password recovery—support may guide you through reset steps.

Prevent Future Lockouts

Avoid repeating the reset cycle.

Best Practices

  • Write down credentials immediately after setup.
  • Store in a password manager or secure notebook.
  • Label camera channels and document UID.
  • Take a photo of settings menus for backup.
  • Use consistent Wi-Fi names when relocating.

Firmware & Updates

  • 63890 DVR firmware: V7.1.0.20170523 (no updates since 2017).
  • System remains functional despite outdated software.
  • No official update path—do not flash third-party firmware.

Summary: Reset Methods by Model

Model Reset Method Password Recovery Notes
4-Channel Wireless Hold reset 10–15 sec None Use My CamView app post-reset
CDR 900 Dash Cam Menu > Factory Reset Only via reset Reconnect via DriveHD app
63890 DVR Button combo or power cycle Only via reset No software recovery; 8-char limit

Final Note: A Cobra security camera reset is the only reliable fix for password loss or unresponsiveness. Always back up recordings before resetting, use MP4/AVI for exports, and disable remote features if privacy is a concern. While some functions like FTP and cloud are unreliable, local recording and motion detection work well when properly configured. Keep this guide handy for future troubleshooting—and never throw away the reset pin.
